How to Help the People of Nepal

فَإِنَّ مَعَ الْعُسْرِ يُسْرًا. إِنَّ مَعَ الْعُسْرِ يُسْرًا
“And, behold, with every hardship comes ease. Verily with every hardship comes ease”
-Quran, 94:5-6

Nepal Earthquake Emergency

As many of you are aware, the nation of Nepal was hit with a 7.8 magnitude earthquake early Saturday, April 25th. Several aftershocks, measured at up to 5.5 magnitudes, have since followed in the last 48 hours causing deadly avalanches from Mount Everest, one of the largest mountains in the world.

Islamic Relief Worldwide and Qatar Red Crescent are raising funds for the necessary medical assistance, search and rescue support as well as the rebuilding process. If there’s a similar organization out there providing assistance to Nepal, please share the information in the comments below so that the post is updated with resources.

This is the least we can do to help the people of Nepal from afar. As well as to keep them in our thoughts and prayers.

May God grant the people of Nepal much patience and strength to get through this adversary… Ameen.

San Francisco Bay Area Hit With a 6.1 Earthquake!

I remember when the earthquake hit in October of 1989 like it was yesterday! It was one of the scariest moments of my childhood! Being with my younger brothers & my very pregnant mommy when it hit, I soon felt safe. We instructed each other on the drill we learned from school (“get under the table, NOW!”), comforted each other and slowly put away anything that had fallen off the shelves. Since we lived in a second story apartment, to be safe, we spent the night in the lobby in case any major aftershock hit while we slept.

Reading on today’s earthquake via Twitter while being so far away from home, that moment when I was scared just rushed through me. I’m, once again, comforted by messages via apps and social media that my loved ones are all OK in their homes.

Insha’Allah everyone is OK, especially those experiencing their first earthquake. May you always be surrounded with your loved ones to comfort you and  make you feel safe… Ameen.

San Francisco Tsunami Update from Supervisor Carmen Chu

The following is an email update from San Francisco’s District 4 Supervisor, Carmen Chu regarding the Tsunami warnings issued today.

Hello neighbors,

While our thoughts and prayers go out to those who have suffered the most in the earthquake and tsunami disaster in Japan, I wanted to pass along information about the local situation from the San Francisco Department of Emergency Management:

The City and County of San Francisco continues to monitor the situation related to the Tsunami warning issued this morning. As a precaution, the upper and lower Great Highway, as well as Ocean Beach, Baker Beach, China Beach, and Fort Funston have been closed.

The San Francisco Department of Emergency Management (DEM) has activated the City’s Emergency Operations Center.  DEM is in regular contact with the California Emergency Management Agency.

The City has not ordered an evacuation.  Residents are advised to monitor local media for information updates.

Please don’t hesitate to call my office at 415-554-7460 should you have any further questions or concerns.
